  • Allergies
What are common childhood allergies? Allergies are the body’s overreaction to substances that are otherwise harmless to others. The body produces antigens against these substances as a method of defense, resulting in a variety of symptoms, such as a runny nose or breathing difficulties. Common allergens that affect children include:
    • Dust
    • Pollen
    • Insect bites
    • Pet dander
    • Cigarette smoke
    • Certain medications

Allergies can resolve as your child grows into adulthood, but some people will need to manage allergies for the rest of their life. What are the symptoms of allergies? When your child has seasonal allergies, or allergic rhinitis, they may frequently have a runny nose, persistent sneezing, and itchy and watery eyes. Allergies to medications and insect bites can cause symptoms like:
    • Hives
    • Skin rash
    • Wheezing

Skin allergies are common in children. This type of allergy produces a skin rash, known as eczema, which causes a painful, scaly rash often on the face, elbows, and knees. Some children also develop asthma when they come into contact with an allergen. This condition causes the airways in the throat to swell up, making breathing difficult. Children with food allergies may experience chronic stomach aches, diarrhea, vomiting, and skin rashes after exposure to an allergen. Common food allergies include eggs, milk, soy, and nuts. Allergies can also cause a potentially life-threatening reaction, known as anaphylaxis. This condition puts the body into shock, making breathing very difficult and possibly causing the loss of consciousness. If not treated immediately, anaphylaxis can result in long-term health issues and death.
  • What treatment options are available for allergies?
  • Depending on the type and severity of your child’s allergy,
Dr. Sarna and her team create a care plan that treats allergy symptoms and helps your child avoid exposure to certain allergens.
  • For seasonal allergies,
Dr. Sarna may recommend over-the-counter antihistamines to reduce the severity of symptoms. Your child may need to take these medications all year long, or on an as-needed basis.
  • Food allergies require extreme caution about what your child eats.
Dr. Sarna can help you create a diet plan that keeps your child away from food allergens while still ensuring they receive the proper nutrition.
  • If your child has skin allergies,
Dr. Sarna can provide a prescription-strength topical cream to keep skin hydrated and lessen the severity of itching. If you suspect your child has allergies, schedule a consultation today. You can book online or by phone.
  • Acute Bronchitis-
Acute bronchitis results from an inflammation of mucous membranes on the bronchial tubes. It lasts for 5-14 days. In most cases, it resolves spontaneously.
An infection or virus often initiates acute bronchitis. Bronchitis in children can also result from other medical problems such as asthma, sinus, or tonsil issues.

Symptoms and Diagnosis -

  • Frequent Coughing
It can start as a dry cough and then becomes a wet  cough with phlegm. This can last for several weeks  after the other symptoms have resolved

  • Acne The teenage years are hard enough without the stigma of adolescent acne.
Acne flare-ups can impact your teen’s self-esteem and self-confidence, as well as the health of their skin. At her pediatric practice Manpreet Sarna, MD, and her compassionate team offer innovative treatment options to manage teen acne issues. If your teen is struggling with chronic acne issues, contact the office today for a consultation.
  • Acne is a common skin condition that affects teens.
Acne happens when the hair follicles beneath the skin’s surface become clogged with excess oils and dead skin cells, causing an inflammation that forms noticeable bumps, like:
    • Blackheads, or open clogged pores
    • Whiteheads, or closed clogged pores
    • Pimples, or tender pus-filled bumps
In severe acne, scaly skin lesions can form on the surface of the skin. Any of these issues can result in physical discomfort and increase your teen’s risk for scarring. What causes acne? Clogged hair follicles that trigger acne breakouts may be the result of excess oil production in your teen’s body. Your teen may also develop frequent acne breakouts due to bacteria if they’re not cleaning their face properly. Hormone changes can also trigger acne. For this reason, teens who use hormonal birth control are at increased risk for acne breakouts. Your daughter may also experience frequent acne issues in the days before her period starts. Teens may also develop acne or notice their breakouts are worse after eating certain foods, including bread, skim milk, or chocolate. For kids with existing acne, touching the face or picking at pimples can trigger additional acne flare-ups. What treatments are available for acne? During the initial evaluation, Dr. Sarna and her team assess your child’s overall skin health, their usual diet, and their skin cleansing habits.
  • She can provide resources to ensure your teen is washing their skin properly and using high-quality products for cleaning and acne control.
If home care isn’t enough to address moderate to severe acne outbreaks, Dr. Sarna can prescribe medications to ease the severity of your teen’s acne. The goal of treatment is to reduce the frequency of acne and prevent long-term scarring or infection. Dr. Sarna may recommend lifestyle and dietary changes to prevent future acne issues and the worsening of your teen’s current condition. It’s important that your teen avoid picking or squeezing pimples. They may also need to avoid exposure to the sun during acne flare-ups.
